After landing I found out that two other EF teachers were on the same flight. We were driven to the hotel that we'll call home for the next two weeks where I discovered something important: toilet paper is akin to gold. Many public toilets do not have toilet paper or charge for it, which is why you are advised to bring around a packet of tissues. I was prepared for the no toilet paper in the public bathroom. I was not prepared for no toilet paper in the hotel. NO TOILET PAPER. When I went down to the lobby to inquire about it I ran into one of the other teachers, so he and I walked around the block to find a place to buy some after we were politely informed we should probably provide this luxury for ourselves. Apparently the other teacher on our flight was not so kindly rebuffed. When she called down about it she was told "Buy yourself!" and then hung up on.
Also did my first solo shopping in a grocery store. I got scolded at the register and wasn't allowed to buy my bananas (I think this is because I didn't bring them to the produce counter to be weighed and priced, but I can't be sure because as you may have guessed my Mandarin is lacking). So I had to watch my bananas get tossed to the side where I couldn't reach them but I successfully bought six other items so not a complete loss.
Tomorrow is free for apartment hunting. I was hoping to live with a roommate but this suggestion has not been met with enthusiasm by the people I've run it by. I know it can't be my sparkling personality so I guess everyone just really wants their private space. RIGHT?!
