Clothing Last week I attended the company New Year's party, set halfway between the calendar new year and the Chinese New Year. The theme was traditional dress, so my school decided to order each teacher a matching qípáo (traditional Chinese dress). I love mine and will definitely wear it again, however the interesting thing about clothing in China is the sizing. For example, my dress is a 3XL. The largest size available was a 4XL. It seems that while I've lost a couple of pounds since moving to China, I've simultaneously gained several dress sizes. If I were to die or be maimed in Shanghai, it would likely be from attempting to cross the street. Traffic laws Americans may be used to probably don't apply here. Some examples:
| Transportation Riding the metro in Shanghai is an inexpensive way to get around. However if you try to ride during rush hour, God help you. People will push until they are packed like sardines and are literally falling out of the train car. You have to be willing to push too or you will never make it on, and rest assured that there is no less-crowded train on its way. I snapped this picture on a moderately crowded ride. This is far from the worst it can get because I had the space to raise my hand to take the picture. I feel sorry for anyone who will take public transportation with me back home because my need for personal space is mostly gone and I will never again believe anyone who tells me a bus or train is full in America. |

Can't wait to ride the subway with you. Are there seats for " wide loads"?

I guess we can call you the dragon lady now. Love the dress. I think Sam will make use of his size advantage when he visits.

Sarah, your blog is cracking me up! Sorry I forgot to mention the scooters on the sidewalk in my "words of wisdom" email.
