Another difference in food culture is the way food is prepared. An oven is not a common kitchen appliance in China because it's not necessary to make Chinese food. If a home residence does have an oven, it is often a toaster oven used for baking. My co-worker had a variety of kitchen appliances, including a bread maker, because she loves to cook. I had mentioned I miss being able to bake, so she insisted we make something at her house. She even recruited her husband to help. (He was miserable during this process. Marriage doesn't seem all that different from home.) We also went strawberry picking, which I think he found slightly more enjoyable.
